Even the pros need to make goals to stay on the organizational straight-and-narrow. Here's what tops their to-do lists this year.
1. Touch everything you own (just once!) and decide to keep it or toss it.
"We ask clients to do this, but it's been awhile since I've actually done it myself. This year, I want to know exactly what's in my home. I've been working in small chunks, going through categories of items at a time. I've already realized that I have too much storage, and have consolidated some boxes. Also, my shelves are cleaner and clearer. My home feels lighter, and I haven't even started on the kitchen!" – Marla Kabashima, organizing coach at Maeve's Method
2. Give memorabilia to those who would love it more.
"This year, I want to share memories. When I've culled through my memory boxes from childhood, I found dozens of letters from old friends, many of which were more about my friends' lives than mine. I plan to reach out to some of them and return their notes, reconnect, and take a trip down memory lane. – Maeve Richmond, founder and organizing coach at Maeve's Method
4. Embrace open space.
"I have a tendency to want to utilize every inch of space. This year, as I remove things, I'm keeping the space I've created empty to make my apartment feel bigger. I'm determined to not fill shelves to the brim, and give my things room to breath." – Marla Kabashima, organizing coach at Maeve's Method
