Realtor.com: How to Organize Toys in 5 Painless Steps

Maeve's Method Coach Katie shares top toy organization tips with Realtor.com.

Step No. 2. Sort the toys into piles

Sort the toys into piles
"Pick a section to work on, and then literally sit on the carpet with your child and go through each type of toy," recommends Kate McCann, an organizing professional with Maeve's Method.
Ask your kid about the toys so you can determine how often she plays with them or whether she's outgrown a few.
"By posing these questions, you'll begin to develop categories," McCann says.#categories

Step No. 3. Label each pile

Label each pile
As you go through the piles, label them based on your intentions. For example, "broken/missing pieces," "donate," "keep," "yard sale," and "regift" (yes, anything that passes for nearly brand-new can sometimes be used as a last-minute gift for a birthday party). This can be a lesson in organization for your kids, too. #CATY
"As you start to put the toys back, show your tot that the coloring books and pencils go together, all the cars have a home, and the same thing for her dolls," McCann adds. #everythinghasahome

Step No. 5. Practice the routine

Once the toys are organized, inspire your kids to help keep them this way.
"Teaching children from a young age to own their items puts the onus on them to routinely assess their belongings and maintain their own spaces," explains McCann. By practicing the task of putting things away where they belong, you'll enable your kids to be independent, make their own decisions, and have great organizational skills for life. #kidpower
