Meet Katie, New Maeve’s Method Coach
Maeve interviews Katie, our newest Maeve's Method organization coach.
Last New Year’s Eve, as the year was winding down to a close, I received a letter from an organizer here in New York looking for advanced training with someone already in the field. I liked her energy right away. Anyone who sends a resume on the last day of the year is OK in my book.
We met a few weeks later, and Katie did not disappoint. She truly has it together. I was impressed by how well she navigated a career shift from the corporate world to the more heart-centered world of an organizing professional. I was also touched by her desire to improve upon her skills, and take her career to the next level.
Katie trained this winter, and as we moved into spring she impressed me by landing a 10-year old as her first client. She’s a natural at this work, and I’m thrilled to have her on my team. I sat down this month with Katie to chat with her about her life as an organizer and Maeve’s Method coach. #coaching
Maeve: What inspired you to get started in the home organizing field?
Katie: I wanted to do work that helped others and involved something I was naturally inclined towards. I have always had a knack for organizing spaces and making them aesthetically pleasing. I also see how being organized is so beneficial and helpful in my own life; I wanted to be able to help impart this on others. This work also incorporates skills from my past roles and it fit my lifestyle values of flexibility and not being at a desk all day.
Maeve: What do you enjoy most about being a Maeve’s Method coach?
Katie: I love that I can help people attain life long skills. I recently worked with a ten-year old girl, Brooke. I loved that I was teaching her tactics she can implement throughout her life. I realized that a lot of the value behind having an organized space and life can actually prevent fights or discord down the road. I love being able to give people that attention and it was a special feeling for a 10-year-old to have one-on-one time with an adult. Overall, I love being part of someone’s decision to make a positive change in their lives.
Maeve: What’s an example of a recent client experience where coaching helped to turn their life around?
Katie: I worked with a client that had lived in her apartment with her fiance for over a year and half and had a wall of boxes she had never unpacked from her move. The longer she waited to unpack, the more ominous the task became. Being able to help her finally get her hands on these boxes, sort through them and decide what to keep or let go was very rewarding. It really helped her move forward and realize these were simply boxes and that the task wasn’t so daunting with my support.
Maeve: What do you enjoy most about helping people in their homes?
Katie: Your home is a really personal space that is often a safe haven that you can really relax in, be yourself and shut out the world when needed. I think it’s brave when people recognize they’d like to make a positive change in getting their home in order and inviting someone into their personal space to assist them. I think taking these steps to better your own safe space is really admirable and I always like having a hand in people making positive changes to their lives.
Maeve: Do you have any specialties in your coaching work?
Katie: I like working with people with busy jobs who aren’t home a lot that need better organization to align with their busy lifestyle. Also, I love working with people in transitions- moving, a new baby, a loss even- it is rewarding work to help someone in these transitions and provide support as they go through things and help someone during these major changes.
Maeve: Aside from coaching, what are some other interests in your life?
Katie: I love staying active, especially hot yoga or outdoor activities like hiking and running, watching and discussing popular TV series, books and movies, exploring new places and cities and socializing with my husband, family and friends.
Maeve: We all want to know, what’s your home like? Tell us what you enjoy most about returning to your own home?
Katie: I love the feeling of walking into my apartment after a long day or trip away. People have described my husband and my apartment as homey and comfortable, which is a real compliment to us. I love the idea of people feeling at home in our space.
