Top 5 Space-Saving Closet Organization Solutions
Maeve and her team share top solutions for a classically organized closet.
In New York, you’re lucky to get an apartment with a #closet, and even luckier if that closet is anything more than the smallest of broom closets. We’ve spent countless hours helping people – and ourselves – maximize their closet space and create a beautiful, streamlined closet. Here are our favorite closet organization solutions from those countless hours so that you, wherever you are, can take one step closer to your dream closet.
Invest in Uniform Hangers
I know we’ve said this before, but we can’t stress enough how much quality uniform hangers will make all the difference! With mismatched hangers your clothing hangs at all different heights and is spaced unevenly. Those wire hangers you get from the dry cleaners will eventually bend and will stretch out your clothing. With uniform hangers, like the IKEA wooden hangers above, your clothes will all hang at the same length and be spaced evenly, creating a clean and beautiful look you’ll be motivated to keep up! #matchinghangers
Use the Walls
Take a look in your closet for any unused wall space, high and low! Even a few inches can be used to hang a hook or rod. Hang up and display your collections of #hats, #bags, scarves, #jewelry, and belts. And, don’t forget to use the back of your door. If you can drill into it, attach some hooks or rods, and if you can’t, try an over-the-door solution, like Dawn uses in a hall closet, or some adhesive hooks.
Add a Bookshelf
If you have space, tuck a #bookshelf in your closet against an unused wall or under a hanging rod, where you can use it to divide the closet. They’re perfect for holding #shoes, #boots, bags, and #bins for #accessories. A unit with adjustable shelf placement is best so you can most effectively use space – use a short shelf height for sandals, and a tall shelf height for boots! If you don’t have space in your closet, make the bookshelf a display case for your shoe collection and place it in your bedroom or living room.
Try Shelf Dividers
Shelf dividers from Amazon
If you have open shelves, shelf dividers will help to keep your piles neat and make your displayed closet items look beautiful. Use them to separate stacks of folded clothes or to hold bags and backpacks upright. Shelf dividers will prevent your bags and piles from falling over, so you can easily grab what you need and effortlessly put it back.
Add Vertical Storage
Most #closets come with a hanging rod and a single shelf, with 2 feet of wasted space above the shelf. Go ahead and use this space! It’s a great place to store off season clothing, luggage, holiday decorations, and any other infrequently used items. To take advantage of this underutilized space, place a second shelf above the existing one or use shelf risers – either way, get excited for double the shelf space! #lookup
