How To Make Space In Your Home For Love

In a new relationship? Maeve shares tips on how to make space at home for love.

It can be an exciting, and sometimes scary thing to bring a new person into your life. Whether you’re newly single or have enjoyed the independent life for awhile, what do you do when you’re ready to love and let someone in? Well, with this particular conundrum, we defer to the wisdom of Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.”

When you’ve decided that you’re ready to welcome a special someone into your life, start by making space in your home. Here are a few tips on how to get started:

Remove the Old

Sometimes saying goodbye to the old is the best way to welcome the new. Take a trip around your home and imagine seeing everything through the eyes of a new guest, someone you are excited to impress. Is there anything displayed that you’d rather not have to explain? The usual suspects are pictures, gifts, or memorabilia left over from old relationships. You don’t have to throw these things away, just tuck them someplace less open and obvious.

Not only will you be avoiding an awkward conversation topic, you’ll be removing the constant reminder of past relationships, which will allow you more space to let in future relationships. #couples

Refresh Your Bedroom

Let’s be honest, when you’re looking for love, your #bedroom is bound to come up. Whether or not you’re planning to invite someone into your room, having this space cozy and ready to welcome is an important step to saying yes to love.

Refresh your bedroom with a good cleaning and airing out. The last thing someone wants to do is get intimate in a messy, stuffy room. Open your windows, sweep your floors, and dust your tables. Think about investing in a new set of sheets, this small upgrade will do wonders to your bedroom confidence.

Now that you’ve made your room crisp and clean, think about introducing the comfort factor. Do you have a comforter large enough for two to snuggle under? Are there enough pillows for you and a guest? If not, invest in these things to make an additional house guest feel more welcome. Also, look into adding a few sources of lighting in your bedroom so you have the option of bright, soft, or no lighting.

Cozy Up Your Couch

The bedroom is an important area for a new relationship, but don’t forget about the rest of the house, too! One of the best parts of partnership is cozying up together, so prepare your living room for this.

A favorite place to welcome a new guest is on the couch, so take a look at what you have to offer. Is it stained, always covered in stuff, or simply uncomfortable or unattractive? You don’t have to purchase a new couch to make change, just start with small steps, like introducing cozy, fun, new throw pillows, or cleaning it with a gentle fabric or leather cleanser. A must-have for cozy couch cuddling is a soft throw or blanket. Drape it over the back of the couch (Roseanne style, anyone remember this?) or keep it neatly folded on a table or shelf nearby. And don’t forget to look under the pillows and between couch cushions. Get rid of lingering junk and make your couch welcoming for two.

Make Space

A surefire way to help someone feel welcome in your life is to help them to imagine that they can fit right in. One of the first rituals that occurs when a couple is ready to merge is that someone offers someone else a drawer, or perhaps a section of the closet for hanging clothes, so be proactive and look at your home to see how you can make space for another person. Maybe you’ll decide to thin your wardrobe, pare down items in your bathroom, or leave a little breathing room on your shelves. The extra space will make any guest feel more at home in your space.

The goal here is to subtly show your new sweetie that there’s space for them in your home. Start by clearing a bedside table in the bedroom, so that they feel that there’s room to make themselves comfortable. And when the spark truly ignites, take things a step further and make decisions about the home together.
